1) A Rhino’s horn’s structure resembles a horse’s hooves. The outside is composed of soft keratin, not unlike hair and fingernails, while at its center there are dense deposits of melanin and calcium. If the horn breaks off, the rhino can grow a new one.

2) People have treasured rhino horns throughout known history. The horns have been carved into paperweights and hairpins, cups and dagger handles with its translucent beauty highly prized by artisans. It has also historically been prized for its supposed medicinal qualities and even today in places like China, India and Malaysia, rhino horns are ground and used to treat a variety of ailments including fever, headache, gout, rheumatism and food poisoning. Although extensive research has been done to try to verify the medicinal value of a rhinohorn, only one has shown even a slight correlation between rhino horn and improved health.

3) Just how valuable, monetarily speaking, is a rhino horn? In some places, such as Vietnam, a large rhino horn can run you one quarter to a half million dollars U.S. Because the horn is so valuable at present, many think the only way to stop poaching is to simply try to domesticate the rhino as much as possible and begin farming them for their horns, which would simultaneously drive down the price of a horn and establish a legal market for it. Infact, in some areas, to potentially save the rhino from poachers, the rhinos are incapacitated, then have their horn removed, effectively making them temporarily safe from poachers until the horn grows back. Full grown rhinos, even without their horn, are pretty much at the top of the food chain, besides humans, so some find this to be an acceptable way to try to stop poaching and preserve the rhino. Although, removing the horn does potentially cause problems with its ability to defend itself from other rhinos.

4) For the ancients, the rhino horn was thought to hold magical properties, such as the ability to purify water or be used to detect poisons in drinks. Surprisingly, the latter quality may be true. Because of the horn’s composition, today some believe that strongly alkaline poisons may have produced a chemical reaction inside a cup made from the horn.

5) There are random facts that Africa is home to both species of white, as well as the black, rhino, although the former isn’t white and the latter isn’t black (they’re really both grey or yellowish-grey, looking very similar). In fact, the main distinction between the two species is that black rhinos’ mouths are designed for eating foliage, while white rhinos’ lips are broad and flat, better for grazing. So why are they called “black” and “white” rhinos? For black rhinos, they were simply called this to distinguish them from white rhinos. For white rhinos, nobody knows for sure, but it’s thought that perhaps they were originally named this after the Afrikaans “wyd”, meaning “wide”, so not in reference to their color, but their broad, flat mouths. The theory goes that this then morphed into “white” in English.

6) An adult rhino’s skin can be as much as 5 cm (2 inches) thick, with typical range of thickness across species being 1.5-5 cm thick.

7) “Rhinoceros”, the name, comes from the Ancient Greek “ῥῑνόκερως”, meaning “horn nose”.


8) Rhinos first popped up around 50 million years ago, probably branching off from the Hyracodontidae family of animals. This group looked a bit like horses with the smallest around the size of a dog and the largest, Paraceratherium, thought to be the largest land mammal in history at 16 feet tall at their shoulder height, 26 ft long, and 18 tons in weight.

To answer this question, we’ll start by looking at how living things are classified.
Animal Classification

Scientists classify all living things into different groups. This makes studying living things easier, and also helps us to understand how species evolve. The largest groups are called ‘kingdoms’. There are at least five kingdoms; some scientific systems use six kingdoms.
Here is a list of the kingdoms of living things:
  1. Monerans
  2. Protists
  3. Fungi
  4. Plants
  5. Animals
In America, the system is slightly different, and Monera are split into two groups: Archaea and Bacteria, making six kingdoms!

Every living thing can be placed into one of the kingdoms.

Elephants, Snakes, Bumblebees … and Penguins

Penguins are birds that have evolved to swim not in the sky, but in the water!

Also in the animal kingdom are many other species, such as elephants, snakes and bumblebees. Clearly all of these animals have very different characteristics. This is why each group is further divided into smaller groups, all the way down until we arrive at the individual species.

Each classification level (or rank) has a different name.

The rank after Kingdom is Phylum. An example of a phylum is Chordata. Penguins are members of this Phylum, as are elephants and snakes.
However bumblebees do not possess the characteristics of this phylum, and are instead placed in the Arthropoda phylum. (Arthropods don’t have backbones, and have ‘exoskeletons’, which are external skeletons.)

The next rank down from phylum is class.

Elephants are placed in the Mammalia (mammal) class. Snakes find themselves in the Reptilia(reptile) class, while penguins are in the Aves (bird) class.

The Aves Class: Why Is A Penguin A Bird?


The Southern Cassowary is the world’s second heaviest, and third tallest, bird. Despite looking very unlike a penguin, it shares the characteristics that make them both members of the Aves (bird) class of animals. (Click on the photo to find out more about the Cassowary).
Characteristics of animals in the aves class – birds, in other words – include having feathers and beaks, lightweight skeletons and laying eggs with hard shells.

That sounds like a penguin

Although penguins are flightless birds – i.e. they can’t fly – they still possess all of the characteristics necessary to categorise them as birds.
Whereas most birds have wings, the penguin’s wings have evolved into flippers. Penguins use their flippers to ‘fly’ through the water in pursuit of fish and other creatures.
The classification system doesn’t stop at classes. Members of each class are further divided into other ranks: order, family, genus and – finally – species
(There are other ranks in between, but these are the main ones.)
Penguins are in the Sphenisciformes order, and the Spheniscidae family. This family includes several extinct species of penguin.

The Bald Eagle is species of bird in the Accipitridae family.

How many penguin species are there? Well, that’s a good question! There are between 18 and 20 species of penguin, depending on which scientist you believe. Scientists’ opinions differ on whether some of the species listed below are actually separate species in their own right, or just subspecies of existing species.

Any animal that has feathers, a beak, a lightweight skeleton and that lays eggs is a bird. This means that animals as different as ostriches, hummingbirds and penguins are all birds.

How much do you know about Cane Toad?

The much maligned venomous cane toads earned their bad reputation shortly after being released into the Australian ecology in 1935 with the hope that they would control the destructive cane beetle population. They turned out to be failures at controlling beetles, but remarkably successful at reproducing and spreading themselves.

About 3,000 cane toads were released in the sugarcane plantations of north Queensland in 1935. They now number well into the millions, and their still expanding range covers thousands of square miles in northeastern Australia. They are considered pests, and government eradication efforts include asking residents to help collect and dispose of them.

Cane toads are large, stocky amphibians with dry, warty skin, and are native to the southern United States, Central America, and tropical South America. Their numbers are manageable in their natural range, but they have thrived in Australia because there are few natural predators, they breed easily, and they have abundant food, including pet food, which they steal from feeding bowls left outside of homes.

Their effects on Australia's ecology include the depletion of native species that die eating cane toads; the poisoning of pets and humans; depletion of native fauna preyed on by cane toads; and reduced prey populations for native insectivores, such as skinks.

Cane toad venom is a mix of toxins that primarily affects the functioning of the heart. It is present throughout their bodies and is secreted as a milky liquid from the parotoid glands located over the toad's shoulders. Envenomation is painful, but rarely deadly to humans, although some people have died from eating cane toads and even their eggs.
