Should animal dissection be banned in schools?
21:51
The answer is yes, animal dissection should be banned in schools. Let's see for this interesting science facts reasons:
The millions of animals that are dissected each year in education systems are subjects of severe animal abuse. Many of these animals are sold to schools from fur companies, pet stores and, many times, slaughterhouses. Animals are often stockpiled on top of one another and shipped in crowded containers with no temperature regulation, food, or water. Animals are treated unjustly, and by buying these dissection sets, it is funding and promoting the abuse of animals.
Millions of frogs are harvested every year from the wild for dissection purposes. This means that, along with all of the other ways humans are impacting frog populations, such as global climate change and pollution, humans are also destroying their populations. In the school curriculum, children are taught about the biodiversity crisis and all of its negative aspects, but at the same time, students are encouraged to contribute to it.
Many animals taken for school dissections, especially fetal pigs, are by-products of the meat industry. Almost all of the pigs slaughtered for human consumption are raised in crowded, confined conditions. Not only are their lives substantially shortened, but they are also deprived of space, fresh air, and fresh forage. The fetuses used for dissections are taken from pregnant sows at the slaughterhouse. By continuing with animal dissections, school boards are promoting the mistreatment of the animals raised for the meat industry.
It is not necessary for students to dissect animals in order to see what the insides of the animals look like. If a student were to pursue a career in a field where this is needed, they would have the opportunity to dissect human cadavers in University. However, very few students who participate in these labs in high school will actually go down these career paths. The only thing that an animal dissection lab teaches students is that an animal’s life is disposable and unimportant.
Buying animals for all biology classes can be quite costly. The cost for a high school dissection set can be over $1000.00. However, this is only a one-time purchase. Three years worth of frogs can cost about $1500.00, and for fetal pigs almost $3000.00. However, nowadays there are so many educational, interactive dissection programs that can be used instead, such as Digital Frog 2.5, V-FrogTM, DissectionWorks CatWorks, and many more (Animalearn). With the technologies and programs available in schools to aid with virtual dissections, the money spent on buying dissection sets can clearly be put to better use.

Is it true that penguins are birds
18:44
In this article we are doing to find penguin facts that penguins are birds. They have all of the defining characteristics of the Aves class. Let's see how
To answer this question, we’ll start by looking at how living things are classified.
Animal Classification
Emperor Penguins are birds that live in Antarctica
Scientists classify all living things into different groups. This makes studying living things easier, and also helps us to understand how species evolve. The largest groups are called ‘kingdoms’. There are at least five kingdoms; some scientific systems use six kingdoms.
Here is a list of the kingdoms of living things:
- Monerans
- Protists
- Fungi
- Plants
- Animals
In America, the system is slightly different, and Monera are split into two groups: Archaea and Bacteria, making six kingdoms!
Every living thing can be placed into one of the kingdoms.
Penguins are in the Animal Kingdom. You can find out why on this page: Is a Bird an Animal?
Elephants, Snakes, Bumblebees … and Penguins
Penguins are birds that have evolved to swim not in the sky, but in the water!
Also in the animal kingdom are many other species, such as elephants, snakes and bumblebees. Clearly all of these animals have very different characteristics. This is why each group is further divided into smaller groups, all the way down until we arrive at the individual species.
Each classification level (or rank) has a different name.
The rank after Kingdom is Phylum. An example of a phylum is Chordata. Penguins are members of this Phylum, as are elephants and snakes.
However bumblebees do not possess the characteristics of this phylum, and are instead placed in the Arthropoda phylum. (Arthropods don’t have backbones, and have ‘exoskeletons’, which are external skeletons.)
The next rank down from phylum is class.
Elephants are placed in the Mammalia (mammal) class. Snakes find themselves in the Reptilia(reptile) class, while penguins are in the Aves (bird) class.
The Aves Class: Why Is A Penguin A Bird?
The Southern Cassowary is the world’s second heaviest, and third tallest, bird. Despite looking very unlike a penguin, it shares the characteristics that make them both members of the Aves (bird) class of animals. (Click on the photo to find out more about the Cassowary).
Characteristics of animals in the aves class – birds, in other words – include having feathers and beaks, lightweight skeletons and laying eggs with hard shells.
That sounds like a penguin
Although penguins are flightless birds – i.e. they can’t fly – they still possess all of the characteristics necessary to categorise them as birds.
Whereas most birds have wings, the penguin’s wings have evolved into flippers. Penguins use their flippers to ‘fly’ through the water in pursuit of fish and other creatures.
The classification system doesn’t stop at classes. Members of each class are further divided into other ranks: order, family, genus and – finally – species
(There are other ranks in between, but these are the main ones.)
Penguins are in the Sphenisciformes order, and the Spheniscidae family. This family includes several extinct species of penguin.
The Bald Eagle is species of bird in the Accipitridae family.
How many penguin species are there? Well, that’s a good question! There are between 18 and 20 species of penguin, depending on which scientist you believe. Scientists’ opinions differ on whether some of the species listed below are actually separate species in their own right, or just subspecies of existing species.
Any animal that has feathers, a beak, a lightweight skeleton and that lays eggs is a bird. This means that animals as different as ostriches, hummingbirds and penguins are all birds.
In the future, if anyone asks you are penguins birds?, you’ll know the answer!

[FUNNY] Orangutan smokers
00:37
An orangutan in Malaysia often fall prey to listless, irritable without smoking. So officials decided to force it to abandon this unusual behavior.
AP reported that the Malaysian authorities seized Shirley, the orangutan female names, from a zoo in the city of Johor Bahru in the south last week after discovering it and many other animals live in conditions of extreme hardship and are mistreat.

Nature Alert, a group Nature Conservancy in the United Kingdom, informed the Malaysian authorities about the plight of Shirley earlier this year. The conservation of Nature Alert find regular visitors threw cigarettes into Shirley's cage. They said Shirley seemed to fall into negative states - such as drowsiness, irritability - when not smoking.
Shirley is now being cared for at a zoo named Melaka and they will bring it to the center of the protection of wildlife on the island of Borneo in the coming weeks. Ahmad Azhar Mohammed, Melaka zoo director, said that Shirley will not be providing any more cigarettes because "smoking is not normal behavior for orangutans."
"I'm not saying this orangutan smokers, but it can be addictive if we continue to imitate the behavior of cigarette smoking guests to the zoo," said Mohammed. Experts do not know Shirley started smoking since when.
Officials estimate it's about 20 years old. Orangutans can live up to 60 years in captivity. Many other countries, such as South Africa and Russia, has also detected cases of primates by smokers throwing cigarette visitors into its cage.
