[FUNNY] Orangutan smokers

An orangutan in Malaysia often fall prey to listless, irritable without smoking. So officials decided to force it to abandon this unusual behavior.

AP reported that the Malaysian authorities seized Shirley, the orangutan female names, from a zoo in the city of Johor Bahru in the south last week after discovering it and many other animals live in conditions of extreme hardship and are mistreat.

Nature Alert, a group Nature Conservancy in the United Kingdom, informed the Malaysian authorities about the plight of Shirley earlier this year. The conservation of Nature Alert find regular visitors threw cigarettes into Shirley's cage. They said Shirley seemed to fall into negative states - such as drowsiness, irritability - when not smoking.

Shirley is now being cared for at a zoo named Melaka and they will bring it to the center of the protection of wildlife on the island of Borneo in the coming weeks. Ahmad Azhar Mohammed, Melaka zoo director, said that Shirley will not be providing any more cigarettes because "smoking is not normal behavior for orangutans."

"I'm not saying this orangutan smokers, but it can be addictive if we continue to imitate the behavior of cigarette smoking guests to the zoo," said Mohammed. Experts do not know Shirley started smoking since when.

Officials estimate it's about 20 years old. Orangutans can live up to 60 years in captivity. Many other countries, such as South Africa and Russia, has also detected cases of primates by smokers throwing cigarette visitors into its cage.
